Its January again! I want to say happy new year to everyone that reads my blogs. As the new year has landed plenty of people have mapped out their goals for a healthier, fitter version of themselves. The gym starts to get busier and the health hashtags on Instagram are maxed out.
Now I’m not normally a fan for new year resolutions however I will never put anyone down that wants to make a positive change towards their health and fitness. Many people start off on a very strong path but tend to drift off towards the end of May or even earlier. Why? What happens?
I believe people have great intention when getting started but they may set unrealistic goals or start to deviate from their initial plans because of either, motivation, knowledge, not enough support or all of the above.
So how do we deal with this? How do we keep people on track and continuing to make progress and increasing their health and fitness?
Well plan, plan, plan! When setting goals its extremely important to make a conscious realistic goal that has no external input from other people. Also instead of planning a long term goal you should also write up short term goals that will keep you accountable throughout your journey. For instance; if your goal is strength then perhaps once a month aim to increase a full body movement (deadlift) by 2.5kg. 2.5X12=30 kg increase! 2.5 per month looks a lot more attainable than 30kg in a year.
If you aren’t sure on what are good goals or where to start then contacting a personal trainer is a very good idea as they can help you plan, prepare and execute your goals.
Remember if you see any new comers to the gym to encourage them and support them when needed. We are all training to better ourselves and no matter what someone situation is no one should be made to feel bad about their goals. Lets encourage and help everyone strive to a healthier, better, fitter, happier community.
Till the next blog!
