Women and Weights

It’s a talked about subject in the fitness industry, especially from the girls. The famous question… “Will I get too bulky if I lift weights?”

Simple answer is no…I should end this blog here. However, I want to give the girls some reassurance that this is not the case.

It can seem quite confusing because that’s what happens to men when they lift weights? Correct, however men and women are made up very different. We have two basic hormones; estrogen and testosterone. Testosterone is the building block, that’s the one that helps you build muscle. If you have a healthy level of testosterone and eating right, you should have no problem building muscle.

Now with that been said, men and women have different levels of each of these hormones, males will have higher testosterone bringing the masculinity features. Jaw lines, body/facial hair, deepening of the voice. Whereas females have a lower testosterone level with a higher estrogen levels bringing feminine features; breast, different body shapes, facial features and many more.

Training with weights as a female is probably one of the best things you could do for your body, you will build lean muscle (known as toning) drop body fat levels, strengthen your heart, bones, immune system, the list just goes on and on..

The only real way you would lose your feminine features is if you were using PED (performance enhancing drugs) or commonly known as steroids. That is the only way you will be able to bring your testosterone levels high enough to combat over your estrogen levels leading to masculine features.

There are so many fitness girls to look up to and follow if you are still unsure, Paige Hathaway and Jen Selter are a couple who I believe are good role models for women.

In my personal opinion you will have a healthier physique and look much better with consistent eating and weight training. I’m not neglecting cardiovascular exercise however I do think it’s over prescribed.

I hope this gives some reassurance to the ladies out there. I know It can seem intimidating at first to step into the weight section of the gym but I promise you, you will find many other ladies out in the gym who are on the same track you are.

Happy training,
